Heating tips:

  • If you can, keep your thermostat set at 60 to 68 degrees; any variation outside of these parameters can significantly increase your energy costs.
  • Install a programmable thermostat to turn the heat down when you’re not home, or at night when nobody is awake.
  • Make sure to get routine maintenance, including an annual tune-up.
  • Close doors of unused rooms; also close vents.
  • Use ceiling fans to circulate warm air, especially in rooms with high ceilings.

    Cooling tips:

  • Keep your air conditioning outdoor unit clean;  remove any dirt, grass clippings or other debris.
  • Don’t cool unused rooms; block vents to these rooms.
  • Use a programmable thermostat to keep the air conditioning off while you’re away from the house.
  • When possible, use ceiling fans instead of air conditioning.

    Water heating tips:

  • Keep your water heater’s temperature below 120 degrees for the most cost-effective results.
  • Consider a tankless, on-demand water heater.
  • Make sure all leaky faucets are fixed, and that all hot water pipes are properly insulated.
  • Take showers instead of baths, and keep those showers as short as you can.
